Guiding Hands Guardianship Services (GHGS) supports families navigating the transition to adulthood for individuals with developmental disabilities. We offer compassionate guidance to help parents understand the guardianship process and prepare the required court documentation.
The guardianship process can often be complex and confusing for families. While legal representation can be helpful, many families face financial barriers to obtaining an attorney. GHGS helps bridge this gap by providing educational guidance, resources, and support so families can better understand the process and move forward with confidence.
Through personalized support, educational resources, and community connections, GHGS empowers families to make informed decisions as they plan for their loved one's future.

When a child turns 18, they are legally recognized as an adult. For individuals with developmental disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome, or other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), this transition can present challenges if they are unable to make certain important decisions independently.
Parents and caregivers who have spent years caring for and protecting their loved ones may no longer have the legal authority to make certain decisions or to automatically access healthcare information due to adult privacy protections, including HIPAA. This can also affect their ability to assist with benefits, services, and other important matters once their child reaches adulthood.
In these situations, families may need to file a guardianship petition with the Superior Court of New Jersey to continue supporting their loved one in important life decisions.
We provide guidance and educational support to families navigating the guardianship process. We help families understand court procedures and prepare the documentation needed to apply for guardianship.
In New Jersey, parents and family members may apply for guardianship "Pro Se", meaning they can represent themselves in court without an attorney. While this option is available, the guardianship process can be complex and involves multiple forms, supporting documents, and court procedures. GHGS helps families better understand the process and prepare the documentation required by the Superior Court of New Jersey.
By using our services, clients acknowledge and understand that Guiding Hands Guardianship Services is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Our role is to educate, guide, and support families throughout the guardianship process.
Our goal is to help families feel informed, prepared, and confident as they navigate this important legal process for their loved ones.

Guiding Hands Guardianship Services (GHGS) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
Your tax-deductible donation helps us provide guardianship education, bilingual assistance, community workshops, family advocacy, and essential resources, especially for families experiencing financial hardship who may not otherwise be able to afford the help they need.
Many of the families we serve cannot afford the high attorney fees often associated with the guardianship process. Through your generosity, GHGS helps bridge that gap by providing educational guidance and resources that help families navigate the process with greater knowledge and confidence.
Every contribution helps us reach more families, provide educational materials, strengthen community programs, and connect families with critical resources.
Together, we can help ensure that financial hardship does not prevent a family from receiving the guidance, education, and support they need during one of life’s most important transitions.
